There’s always something happening in Austin, and you know we’re chatting about all the latest news and gossip around town in our office. Every Friday, we’ll share the buzziest things you need to know. Everything from events to the most newsworthy local topics, we’ve got you! From our office to you, here’s The 512.

Hook ‘em: The University of Texas announced Brené Brown as its commencement speaker this spring then followed up with even bigger news: the bestselling author and researcher is joining the university as a visiting professor of management at the McCombs School of Business. Brown will be implementing “a new leadership training program centered around courage, trust and vulnerability” based on her book, Dare to Lead. She is the most recent celebrity to bring her expertise to the 40 Acres but not the only one: Matthew McConaughey is still teaching his film-script class and Kendra Scott’s institute kicked off this spring with several classes. It’s a good time to be a Longhorn.

Breaking news: Last week, former Texas Tribune Editor-in-Chief Emily Ramshaw launched women-centric news platform The 19th. A nod to the amendment giving women the right to vote, The 19th is “a nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom reporting at the intersection of gender, politics and policy.” The news organization is already getting lots of buzz online and boasts an impressive founding staff with Amanda Zamora, Andrea Valdez, Errin Haines and Johanna Derlega at the helm.

New in town: San Francisco-based Allbirds opened its first Texas store this past week on South Congress Avenue. The trendy company is known for its sustainable materials and comfortable shoes and with more companies flocking to Austin’s millennial market, it’ll fit right in.

The scoop: South By Southwest is a little more than a month out and celebrity buzz is already building. The latest scheduled star appearance is Michelle Pfeiffer, who is keynoting Create & Cultivate’s annual pop-up. Time to make your SXSW schedule—or plan an out-of-town vacay.
