Meena Matocha Solo Exhibit

A new exhibition by Meena Matocha opens June 1, 2019 at The Gallery at Atelier 1205, Austin, TX. The exhibition features her newest work in charcoal, ashes, soil and wax and will be on display until August 4, 2019.
In the exhibition, “We Shake With Joy, We Shake With Grief,” Meena Matocha paints with charcoal, ashes, soil and wax to create pieces which capture the uncomfortable tension between joy and grief, life and death, and the eternal and temporal – these opposites which exist in the same breath, within the same body. Matocha’s new work is not only an expression of her own personal grief, but she has also created each piece as something of an icon to point the viewer toward this same tension which is common to all of humanity. She uses a combination of abstract expressionism and classical realism to create her life size black and white pieces, a mixture of portraits, figures and swaths of charcoal, ashes and soil.
Matocha has been listed as an artist to see in award winning arts journalist Jeanne Claire van Ryzin’s online magazine, Sightlines, East Austin Studio Tour 2018’s short list out of nearly 500 artists, and mentioned in Ryzin’s list for West Austin Studio Tour 2019, out of nearly 300 artists. Matocha’s work has also been chosen for the Christians in the Visual Arts International Biennial Exhibition for 2019.
Matocha is an artist based in her hometown of Austin ,TX and she is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin’s art school.
