Agnes Varda has been pushing cinema forward since before many of us were born. One of the central figures of the French New Wave, Varda’s work has continued over the decades to be a vital source of humanistic warmth even as she has explored the experimental boundaries of the form.
Her latest film, FACES PLACES (VISAGES VILLAGES in the original French) is a behind-the-scenes look at Varda’s travels with French artist JR, who creates open air photographic exhibits. Varda and JR travel the French countryside, encountering people as they go, getting into their lives and hearts and creating beautiful, moving works of art with them.
FACES PLACES is a breath of fresh air, an ode to the small pleasures of human connection, and it’s anchored by its two delightful and personable leads. A travelogue of another France, the one behind the monuments and art galleries, FACES PLACES celebrates artists and workers, the elderly and the youth, men and women, lovers and dreamers alike.
