Good food is not hard to find in Austin, but for those who want something other than barbecue and tacos, these tasty vegan burgers have you covered.
Plow Burger offers burgers, french fries, desserts and milkshakes that are all completely vegan. The Plow Burger (Beyond Burger patty, vegan cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, red onions and Plow sauce) and the Campfire Burger (Beyond Burger patty, cheese, pickles, mayo, fried shoestring onions and barbecue sauce) are constants on the menu, while more unique items rotate, like the Homer Simpson Burger (Beyond Burger patty, Wheatsville glazed doughnut, Follow Your Heart smoked gouda, Plants Lead Our Way bacon, Buzz Mill Coffee espresso mayo and champagne-vinegar-pickled red onions). The burgers range from $10.50 to $13.50.
Revolution Vegan Kitchen serves burgers, tacos and even vegan mozzarella sticks at its South Austin food-truck location. The Herbivore offers a traditional version of a hamburger, the Texan provides a spicy kick with jalapeños and the Vaquero offers something a little more out of the ordinary, with onion rings covered in barbecue sauce filling the burger. These burgers come with curly fries and cost $12 each.
Arlo’s Food Trucks offer the Bac’n Cheeze Burger and the BBQ Burger at the business’ three locations at Cheer Up Charlies, Spider House and The Grackle. The Bac’n Cheeze Burger includes a house-made, soy-free and gluten-free patty, house-made seitan bacon, melted cheese, mayo, ketchup, mustard, tomatoes, onions, pickles and lettuce. The BBQ Burger has a house-made, soy-free and gluten-free patty that’s grilled in barbecue sauce and is topped with chipotle mayo, tomatoes, onions, pickles and lettuce. Arlo’s burgers cost $8 each.
Austin-based Hat Creek Burger Companyoffers a grain burger for $5.39 that’s the ideal vegan option while on the go.
Bouldin Creek Café is a sit-down restaurant offering an array of vegetarian and vegan options. A lunch special, aptly called the McFib, is made with smoky tempeh strips smothered in house espresso-barbecue sauce, topped with pickled red onions and creamy coleslaw served on a whole-wheat bun. The meal comes with a choice of black-pepper kettle chips, chips and salsa, or lime peanut coleslaw for $8.50. The Veggie Royale, $9.75, includes a house-made veggie burger served on grilled ciabatta with green-leaf lettuce, red onion and locally grown tomatoes, served with chipotle-pecan pesto or basil aioli. Cheddar Jack, vegan American cheese and jalapeños can also be added to the burger.
Mother’s Café is another sit-down restaurant offering its own version of a veggie burger. The Bueno Burger is made of bulgur wheat, seeds, fresh veggies and tofu, and is served on a vegan whole-wheat sesame bun with lettuce, sliced tomato, pickle and purple onion for $8.95.
