Creating a new habit, pursuing a goal and successfully accomplishing a resolution are no easy tasks, but it’s just such tasks we work toward at the beginning of every year. Have you thought about what you want to change this year? People make resolutions as a way of motivating themselves, but most don’t know how to set goals that are realistic, attainable and sustainable. Did you know, according to a 2002 study, less than 10 percent of New Year’s resolutions are actually accomplished? Don’t let that be you this year.

Here are four simple tips for successfully meeting your goals.

  1. Tell others. Share your goals with friends and family. By talking through your resolutions, it will hold you accountable and improve your ability to pursue the goal. For instance, if your best friend is also trying to lose weight, start setting weekly check-ins with one another. Because your friend is aware of your goal, she will help you make healthier choices and support you through your journey. Utilizing a friend as a resource, known as a transactive pursuit, can make achieving a goal both fun and feasible.
  2. Make your goals realistic and specific. Many fail at New Year’s resolutions because they don’t make a plan. Begin by setting a goal that is SMART, meaning one that is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based.
  3. Create a habit by adding it to a habit you already have. For example, if you want to walk 10,000 steps every day, start making a daily ritual of walking for 15 minutes after mealtime. As eating is already a habit, adding a walk will be easier to maintain.
  4. Believe in yourself. On average, it takes more than two months to create a new habit, so stick with your goal and enjoy the process.
